Patrick Johnston founded BOREALIS Advisors in 2010 following a successful thirty year career at the head of some of Canada’s leading philanthropic and charitable organizations.

A former President and CEO of the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation (2002-2009), Patrick held the same position from 1995-2002 with the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy (now ImagineCanada). He is also a former Executive Director of the Canadian Council on Social Development and the National Anti-Poverty Organization.

Patrick has been a member of numerous non-profit Boards of Directors and
committees at a national and international level. Past national Board service includes the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, the United Way/Centraide Canada, Canada World Youth, Philanthropic Foundations Canada, the Canadian Centre for International Justice and the Weiler Trust, among others. He continues to serve on the Boards of Quinte Health Care and Canada Helps which he has chaired since 2011. In 2014, Patrick received one of Canada’s highest civilian honours when he was appointed by Governor General David Johnston to the Order of Canada for “his contributions to the charitable sector as an innovator who develops more effective giving strategies for organizations".

At the international level, Patrick is a former member of the Board and the Global Philanthropy committee of the Washington based Council on Foundations. And he was a member of the Board of Directors of CIVICUS headquartered in Johannesburg serving as Board Chair for almost 3 years.

In previous positions as senior policy advisor to a provincial Premier as well as a federal Canadian Cabinet Minister, Patrick developed a deep understanding of the public policy and regulatory environment as it affects foundations and charities.
